Where is Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm located?
Visit Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm at the tip of the beautiful Dampier Peninsula, one of the last pristine and remote marine wilderness frontiers in the world. Discover our unique collection of pearl jewellery, pairing our locally grown South Sea pearls with elegantly crafted jewellery designs.
What pearls are grown at Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm?
Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm is home to the Australian South Sea pearl, cultured in the native Pinctada maxima pearl shell in the pristine waters of the Kimberley.
Each harvest produces a naturally diverse selection of pearls, including classic round and near-round shaped pearls, elegant drop shapes, bespoke baroque shapes, each completely unique.
Our pearl farm also produces rare Keshi pearls, celebrated for their organic shape, as well as Mabe pearls, which are grown against the inside of the pearl shell to create their hemispherical or dome shape.
No two pearls are exactly the same, with variations in size, shape, colour and lustre creating a natural record of their origin at Cygnet bay.
How are South Sea pearls cultivated at Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm?
Australian South Sea pearls are cultured by inserting a small piece of mantle tissue from a donor oyster into the mantle tissue of a host oyster. The host oyster is then placed in a farm or lagoon, where it is carefully tended until the pearl has grown to maturity, which can take up to two years. The resulting pearl is then harvested and sorted based on its size, shape, color, and quality. The process of culturing South Sea pearls is more complex and time-consuming than other types of pearls, which contributes to their higher value.
What makes Cygnet Bay pearls different from other South Sea pearls?
Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm has been run by the Brown family for generations in one of the most remote stretches of the Kimberley coastline, where powerful tides and pristine waterways create ideal growing conditions for Pinctada maxima pearl shell. This biodiverse environment, combined with farming expertise, produces Australian South Sea pearls with a disctint lustre, size and quality that's unique to the region.
How long has Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm been operating?
Cygnet Bay is Australia's oldest pearling business still owned and run by the same family - the Brown family, since 1946. That long history means every Australian South Sea pearl reflects decades of refined technique and understanding of the cultivation process and the ability to work hand-in-hand with our planet.
